Did you know that there is a Book Lovers Day? It’s celebrated annually on August 9. Here at Blueprint, we’re huge fans of the printed word – so we’ll definitely be marking the occasion!

Here are our suggestions for six different ways to celebrate Book Lovers Day on August 9, 2023.

#1. Buy a print book

The demise of the publishing industry has been predicted for years. However, book sales are stronger than ever. Rather than replacing the printed book, the electronic reader has coincided with strong book sales overall.

There are many reasons why readers still love the printed book format: the textile nature of print enhances the enjoyment of reading. Plus, we tend to retain information we read on paper better than we do screens. That’s why investing in a beautiful printed book is a great way to celebrate Book Lovers Day. Even better, buy it from your local independent bookshop.

 

#2. Join a library

Libraries are often focal points for local communities. As well as providing a vital service in opening up knowledge for all, they help to imbue a love of reading in the next generations. Many local libraries host events, readings and book clubs. Why not visit your own local library and see what is available in your local area?

 

#3. Volunteer at your local library

Often local libraries depend on the goodwill of local volunteers to keep running. Whether it’s reading for the local seniors’ book club, entertaining toddlers reading group, or simply organizing the stacks, Book Lovers Day is a great time to see how you can pay it forward by volunteering in your local library.

 

#4. Build your own little free library

Libraries aren’t always hosted in huge, historic buildings – sometimes they can be as simple as this little library residing in a tree! The little library trend is a brilliant way to foster a love of books and reading and share great stories with your neighbors and visitors to your neighborhood.

 

#5. Donate a book to someone who needs one

Not everyone is lucky enough to have books at home, of course. If you’re able to, donating a book to someone less fortunate is a great way to mark the occasion of Book Lovers Day.

You can often donate via local libraries or, for global impact, donate to international charity Bookaid.

 

#6. Set up your own book club

There is no better way to celebrate your love of books that to gather round with a few fellow book lovers and discuss your latest reading pick. A book club is a great way to meet new people, develop new skills and share your love of a good book. Join a local group – or why not set up your own? You need very little to get started – just a few friends and a great book.
